ARMOUR, ,J. A., G. R. HAGEMAN, AND W. C. RANDALL. Arrythmias induced by local cardiac nerve stimulation. Am. J. Physiol. 223(5) : 10684075. 1972.-Electrical and mechanical activity were recorded from multiple regions of the canine heart during electrical stimulation of distal portions of individual cardiac nerves. Functional responses included generalized augmentation in contractile force, together with sinus or supraventricular tachycardia when the stimulus was applied to the stellate ganglion or to portions of the left sympathetics rostra1 to their projection onto the surface of the heart. Alterations in contractile force and the development of tachyarrhythmic states became more localized as the ventrolateral cervical cardiac nerve was stimulated more distally. Mechanical alternans accompanied progressive acceleration in heart rate, but was generated to varying degrees within highly localized portions of the cardiac musculature. Excitation of the ventrolateral nerve at the level of the superior pulmonary vein elicited marked tachycardia with a supraventricular pacemaker. Stimulation of the same nerve at a point just caudal to the inferior pulmonary vein where it projects onto the left ventricle induced both atria1 and ventricular tachycardias, each at a different rate. Effective reserpinization or local procainization eliminated the ability to elicit such tachyarrhythmias.

Cryoablation-induced phrenic nerve dysfunction with preserved inspiratory function of the diaphragm.

A 49-year-old woman underwent cryoballoon pulmonary vein isolation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Right phrenic nerve palsy developed during submaximal phrenic nerve stimulation. Despite the inability to stimulate the phrenic nerve with pacing, diaphragmatic excursion during inspiration was preserved. This case demonstrates that submaximal threshold stimulation allows detection of early ph...

Effect of Diphenylhydantoin and Lidoca1ne on Cardiac Arrhythmias Induced by Hypothalamic Stimulation

The importance of the central nervous system in the antiarrhythmic actions of diphenyhiydantoin and lidocaine was studied using arrhythmias induced by electrical stimulation of the posterior hypothalamus in cats. Hypothalamic stimulation resulted in cardiac arrhythmias mediated by the sympathetic nervous system. The arrhythmias occurred during stimulation, and recordings from cardiac sympatheti...

Increased Local Sympathetic Nerve Activity During Pathogenesis of Ventricular Arrhythmias Originating from the Right Ventricular Outflow Tract

BACKGROUND The contribution of local sympathetic nerves to ventricular arrhythmia (VA) originating from the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) has not been elucidated. This study used a canine model to investigate the anatomical changes of the RVOT associated with VA, and the distribution of local sympathetic nerves. MATERIAL AND METHODS The RVOT-VA canine model (6 dogs) was induced with a ...

Sympathetic activation triggers ventricular arrhythmias in rat heart with chronic infarction and failure.

OBJECTIVE To seek direct evidence for a cause-effect relation between sympathetic activation and arrhythmogenesis. METHODS Rats underwent open-chest surgery with either coronary artery occlusion or sham operation, and were studied 8 weeks later using in situ heart perfusion and nerve stimulation methods. RESULTS Infarcted rats showed cardiac functional impairment and increased heart and lun...
